Job Training is Too Long for Me, What Do I Do - Work It Daily
Job Training is Too Long for Me, What Do I Do - Work It Daily Dear J.T. Dale: I just took a new job at a large organization. I was told during the interview process that I'd go to training for two weeks at corporate HQ. I don't like to be away from my family, but I could handle two weeks. I just got an e-mail that states the training is SIX WEEKS! I am horrified! There is no way I am going away for that long. What can I do? - Vance J.T.: Start by taking a deep breath. Often in larger organizations, there are communication errors of this type. Forward the e-mail to your manager. If your boss responds with an apology and says the six weeks is correct, then ask for a meeting, where you'll calmly explain that you aren't comfortable being away that long and gently mention that had you known this in the interview process, you might not have chosen to take the job. Then, close by stressing how much you love the position and want to be a part of the company, and ask if the training can be broken up over time. By calmly stating your concern and offering a solution, you show that you want to find a way to make this work. If your boss says it's not possible, then I think you need to have a serious family conversation. Could this one time away be worth it? DALE: YES! That's easy for me to say, of course, but think what six weeks of out-of-town training says about your new employer: They're making a huge investment in you. Grab it. Have your family come visit, or fly home for a weekend or two, but take this chance to learn and to become friends with co-workers from around the country. You'll get smarter and better connected, all on an expense account. Feel free to send questions to J.T. and Dale via e-mail at advice@jtanddale.com or write to them in care of King Features Syndicate, 300 W. 57th Street, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10019. © 2012 by King Features Syndicate, Inc. 4 Signs Youre Smarter Than You Think
4 Signs Youre Smarter Than You Think Do you secretly suspect that you may be brilliant, but havent found a way to prove it? Alternatively, are you feeling particularly dumb today, and need someone to slap you with some self-confidence?While these 4 indicators cant serve as total proof of intelligence, studies indicate that theyre far mora common among those with higher IQs. So if any of these signs seem familiar to you, go ahead and indulge in a bit of smugness. You may very well deserve it.1. If yur workspace looks like an active disaster zone, you could have a high IQ.Your nearby coworkers, your spouse, and/or your roommates may complain about your tendency to sweep through personal and shared spaces like a whirlwind of messiness. But as it turns out, a disorganized desk could be evidence of your heightened intelligence.A recent piece in The Independent referenced a study from the University of Minnesota that suggestedthe messy desk of geniuses is actually linked to their intellige nce. If you dont spend much time cleaning and organizing everything around you, your mind is obviously occupied with mora important stuff.2. If youre the oldest child, you could be mora intelligent. The idea that birth order and IQ are connected has milled around academic communities for years, but Edinburgh University decided to get a first-hand look at this theory by studying 5,000 children from birth until they turned 14 and measuring their cognitive development in 2-year increments.According to the Edinburgh University researchers, all children received similar levels of emotional support from their parents but first borns had more support with tasks which developed their thinking skills. Researchers say the findings could help to explain the so-called birth order effect when children born earlier in a family enjoy better wages and more education in later life.3. If youre a night owl, that may be because youre particularly bright.Do you thrive during P.M. hours and resentwakingu p early for work purposes? That preference could relate to your intelligence level. The London School of Economics and Political Science studied the habits of those who tend to stay up late, and discovered that people who tend to go to bed later have higher IQs.Theresearchers drew some interesting conclusions after this study, suggestingthat the root of why some people like to stay up late lies in our evolutionbecause nighttime was a more dangerous place, our ancestors who ventured into it instead of going to sleep needed to be more intelligent. Also, staying awake into the night was a new idea that was attractive to curious minds.4. If yourecomfortable admitting what you dont know, you probably know a lot.People with particularly high IQs arent likely to be the same folks who constantly brag about the knowledge they have on any given topic. Instead, intelligent individuals can acknowledge what they dont know and possess a strong interest in learning more.A Business Insider story ab out the habits of intelligent people cited a study by researchers Justin Kruger and David Dunning, which discovered that the less intelligent you are, the more you overestimate your cognitive abilities. In order to prove their point, Kruger and Dunning conducted an experiment on students whod just taken the LSAT. According to Business Insider, students whod scored in the lowest quartile on a test adapted from the LSAT overestimated the number of questions theyd gotten right by nearly 50%. Meanwhile, those whod scored in the top quartile slightly underestimated how many questions theyd gotten right.
